1) Schedule Regular Maintenance
Annual servicing by a qualified and registered Gas Engineer can catch potential problems early, ensure safe operation, and keep your boiler running at peak efficiency. An annual boiler service helps identify worn-out parts before they cause bigger issues and prevent issues from forming, check out our service checklist.
2) Get an inhibitor added to your system.
It is essential to ensure that your heating system is not only protected with corrosion inhibitors but also undergoes a replacement at least once every five years to maintain its efficiency and reliability. This necessary process can conveniently be carried out during your annual service, significantly reducing the chances of sludge buildup that can lead to various complications with the boiler’s performance. The formation of sludge, which consists of sediment and debris, is regarded as the primary culprit behind boiler failures across the UK, making it imperative to address this issue proactively to avoid costly repairs and ensure consistent heating in your home.
3) Monitor Water Pressure
Keeping an eye on your boiler’s water pressure can prevent damage. If the pressure is too high or too low, it can lead to breakdowns. Check the pressure gauge regularly and adjust it according to your manufacturer’s recommendations, if you are a KMC Gas Customer you can call us to talk you through the process.
4) Install a Magnetic Filter
Over time, debris like rust and sludge can build up in your heating system. A magnetic filter traps this debris before it reaches your boiler, improving efficiency and preventing blockages that could damage internal components, according to Adey, a manufacturer of Magnaclean sludge is responsible for 80% of boiler breakdowns.
5) Test your heating in the summer
During the summer months when you have the heating off, it is a good idea to put you heating on, even for 5 minutes.
This allows the valves to move and prevent seizing, it circulates any inhibitor around the system which helps prevent corrosion.
It will also flag up any issues that are present well before the heating system is needed, if you turn it on in the first cold snap and notice an issue you will have to contact an already busy heating engineer and may not be able to get someone out as soon as you would in the summer.
